How Homeowners Can Prevent Winter Weather Damage to Their Property

Take these precautions to prevent winter weather damage.

During the winter months, homeowners experience some of the worst weather they will see all year.  Naturally, this bad weather can lead to serious damage to your home.  Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to protect your property.  Take these precautions to prevent winter weather damage this season.
  • Ask a Neighbor to Check Your Home- If you are going away for the holidays, then hire a house sitter or ask a neighbor to check up on your home. This way, someone will be able to call for help if your home sustains damage or is broken into.
  • Check Your Roof- During the winter months, heavy rain and cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your roof. This can lead to extensive water damage to your home's structure and its contents.  To prevent such damage, inspect your roof while the weather is still clear and repair any minor damage that you notice.  Throughout winter, continue to check your roof to deal with broken, missing, or damaged shingles and cracks or holes in your roof.
  • Run Your Swimming Pool Pump- If you have a swimming pool on your property, then you have probably closed it in preparation for the winter. However, you should keep your pool pumps running when temperatures drop below freezing to ensure that your water lines do not freeze over.
  • Check for Dead Tree Branches- You should check the trees on your property for any dead or diseased branches. During a winter storm, high winds and heavy snowfall can cause these branches to fall down.  These falling branches can strike your property or your neighbor's property, causing significant damage.  Removing compromised tree branches now will save you this trouble later.
Take these precautions to prevent winter weather damage.  Want another way to keep your home safe this winter?  Then make sure you have the right homeowners insurance in place.  For assistance with all your home coverage needs, contact the experts at Fuller Insurance Agency in Southern California today.
